Ciprofloxacin was first patented by the Bayer A.G. pharmaceutical company in 1983, and approved by the FDA in 1987. It is an antimicrobial, a substance that kills or suppresses the growth of bacteria or fungi. Sold under the brand name Cipro, Ciprofloxacin is a prescription-only medication used in the treatment of various types of infections, including:
Ciprofloxacin is available in the form of film-coated yellowish tablets (100mg, 250mg, 500mg, and 750mg) or an intravenous solution. The Ciprofloxacin 500mg tablets usually come with a recommended dosage of every 12 hours, as they are rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. According to the FDA, patients who are prescribed Ciprofloxacin 500mg should be advised that “although it is common to feel better early in the course of therapy, the medication should be taken exactly as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may increase the likelihood that bacteria will develop a resistance and become untreatable, or may decrease the overall effectiveness of the treatment.”
Even with its many valuable uses, as with most prescription medications, it is possible that taking Ciprofloxacin may impair the patient’s ability to drive or operate other machinery. Therefore, it is always recommended that, until the patient is fully knowledgeable of how the drug affects them, they do not attempt to drive.
